Heritage Dress

The Heritage Dress was my submission to participate in the 2015 Project IMA runway show featuring designs created by national artists and fashion designers, presented in conjunction with Cutting-Edge Fashion: Recent Acquisitions by the Indianapolis Museum of Art. The fourth in a series of fashion shows organized by the IMA, this 2015 event showcased both emerging and established design talent, as a means of engaging Indianapolis community through fashion.

Taking inspiration from the ‘Cutting-Edge Fashion: Recent Acquisitions’ exhibit at the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) in 2015, I was encouraged to cut loose from the past and look to the future, or embrace the past and celebrate the future through a design work that is experimental and inventive in concept, construction and/or materials. Titled ‘Àwọn ọmọ Yorùbá in diaspora’, I created this design as a highlight to immigrants in diaspora; how we bring and share the history of our cultures and traditions into our growth in our newfound homelands.

“In 2017, I was approached by the Indiana State Museum (ISM) to showcase this design in the Color of Style exhibit. The curator sought to create an exhibition that explored colors, how we feel and express ourselves with colors through the history of clothing and costume.”

The Color of Style exhibition is open March 2019 through August 2019.
